About Silas

The Las Vegas Family Unity Bond Fund was launched in May 2019 in honor of Silas Añorve, a 14-year-old member of our Las Vegas community who took his own life in August 2018 upon learning of his father’s possible deportation to Mexico.

The Las Vegas Family Unity Bond Fund honors his life and the countless children like him who struggle with family separation as a result of hateful immigration politics.

A message from Silas’ mother:

On the night of August 20, 2018 we lost a beloved son and brother, Silas. We honor the life of Silas by keeping his legacy of spreading love and light alive through the work being done by the Las Vegas Family Unity Bond Fund. Silas was such a caring, gentle, kind-hearted child. He prided himself on being an honor student and was so proud of his academic achievements and being in the G.A.T.E. program throughout elementary school. One of his proudest moments came when he was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society in the eighth grade.

Silas was just a regular happy-go-lucky teenager who loved his family, school, friends, animals, pizza, the music of “Shaggy”, and old black-and-white movies. He was passionate about music and loved playing his violin. Silas was a giver of his time and money. Whenever he could he gave from his allowance to the homeless and needy and always took part in the charity food drives at school. He was always cleaning out my pantry to donate to the food drives. He would even asked me to take him grocery shopping when there was a bigger need for food and supplies.
